AS/A2 English Language and Literature
AS/A2 English Language and Literature explores the structure of the language and how it has developed over the centuries in drama, poetry and prose. We will study at a technical, linguistic level how grammar and vocabukary are used in different situations and analyse and compare differnet texts. This course is suitable for you if you enjoy reading. It also gives you the opportunity to produce pieces of creative writing.

AS Course Content
The AS course comprises two modules:
1. Critical Reading of Literary and Non-Literary Texts
For this module, you will study how language functions in spoken and written texts and analyse the use and effects of language, grammar, layout and sound. You will look at how texts are organised and structured by comparing and discussing prose and poetry texts. You will study how language has changed, consider the writers' use of literary and linguistic techniques and comment on the significance of contextual background. You will study am anthology of pre-1900 poetry and prose texts. This year we are studying In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey.
Assessment: 2½ hour written examination%
2. Creative Writing
For this module, you will produce two pieces of original writing, one literary and one non-literary, and a commentary in which you will compare both pieces. You will be assessed on your ability to write appropriately for your chosen audience and purpose and to reflect intelligently on your own writing.
Assessment: coursework â€" two writing tasks and a commentary on both.

A2 Course Content
The A2 course comprises a further two modules:
3. Analysing and Producing Performance Texts
For this module you will study and compare one Shakespeare play and another drama text from a different period. As well as analysing language and dramatic techniques, you will study the significance of contextual background. You will also be expected to produce two performance texts of your own for different audiences and purposes and evaluate the effectiveness of one of these pieces.
Assessment: Coursework â€" two pieces, one analysis of two performance texts and two original spoken texts for performance, plus a commentary on one of the texts
4. Comparative Textual Analysis and Review
You will also be asked to compare and contrast texts from different genres and periods and will be expected to analyse the ways in which the writers use literary and linguistic techniques. You will study one additional poetry or prose text for this unit but will be asked to make links with texts you have studied throughout the course. This year we are studying Wuthering Heights.
Assessment: 2½ hour written examination

English Language and Literature and your future
The study of English Language and Literature at this level can lead to a range of further studies and careers, including journalism, publishing, media, teaching and creative writing. However, if you want to specialise in English at degree level, we recommend you study A level English Literature.
