AS / A2 FURTHER MATHEMATICS

Further Mathematics is a subject for students with a deep interest in Maths. By taking this with A/AS Maths, you will study double Maths. You investigate more abstract ideas, like the square root of -1, gain a more complete understanding of the structure of algebra and its practical applications. 3D games moves you through virtual space by using matrices and vectors things you will meet in Further Maths.

Further Maths is great preparation if you want to study Maths at university.

You will work with more complex numbers and problems which will satisfy and challenge you.

Further Maths is a mixture of concepts, ranging from the very real to the very imaginary. It is taught by teachers who challenge your level of abstract thought and reasoning. Karl Tizzard-Kleister: AS Maths 20089, now an A2 student.

AS Further Mathematics

In AS Further Maths you will study:

Pure Mathematics

Complex numbers
Matrices how to use them
Proving formulas using exact arguments
Working with complicated series of numbers.

Additional AS Mechanics and Decision Maths units

Assessment

Three 1 hour examinations.

Entry requirements

A minimum of BBCCC at GCSE including two of English Language or Science. You must also have an A/A* in Mathematics and be studying Mathematics at AS/A2

A2 Further Mathematics

Pure Mathematics

Polar curves.
More calculus.
More complex numbers .
Matrices moving into 3 dimensions.
Hyperbolic functions.
Vectors in 3D.
Groups

Additional A2 Mechanics and Decision Maths units.

Assessment

Three 1 hour written examinations.
