What will I study?

You will develop knowledge and understanding of legal principles and learn how to analyse legal material, issues and situations. You will also develop the ability to present a logical and coherent argument and communicate relevant material using appropriate legal terminology. All students will be expected to develop a wider interest in the Law by undertaking additional reading and research and by visiting the courts. Specialists from within the legal profession will give talks. Some places are available on a student mentoring scheme with either solicitors or law undergraduates. This will give an insight into the working environment of the legal profession.

How is this course assessed?

  • AS: TWO UNITS Sources of Law, English Legal System Sources of Law is a 1 hour written paper accounting for 40% of the total marks for the AS. The exam will be taken in January. English Legal System is a 2 hour written paper accounting for 60% of the total marks for AS. The exam will be taken in June.


  • A2: TWO UNITS Criminal Law, Special Study Criminal Law is a two hour written paper accounting for 60% of the A2. The exam will be taken in June.
Special Study is a one and a half hour written paper accounting for 40% of the A2. The exam will be taken in June.

What next?

It is not essential to have studied Law prior to taking a degree in the subject. However, it does help to have a firm grounding in the subject for success at degree level. A2 Law provides exemption from certain professional examinations including Legal Executives, Banking and the Civil Service.
