'AS' and 'A2' Level Art and Design

Duration: AS 1 year, A2 2 years
Course Level: Level 3
This is a general course intended to develop students' art and design skills, expressive capabilities and creative powers. It is suitable for anyone who considers Art & Design crucial to their future career choices or who wants to continue with Art having gained a good grade at GCSE.
Students need to be committed to an intensive course of study and prepared to devote a lot of time to the production of high-quality work. This involves detailed and wide-ranging research into the work of other artists and designers, an experimental approach to the materials used and the collection of preparatory images that will inspire new ideas.

What will I study?
The course features a wide variety of media
with a clear emphasis on all types of drawing and painting.
Students learn to experiment with many techniques in order to develop strong 'start points' that can be later worked up using different materials, processes and technologies.
There is a lot of flexibility in terms of the specialist areas students can move into, especially in the second (A2) year with possible subjects including; painting, illustration, screen printing, relief printing, dyed textiles, printed textiles, surface design, packaging, typography and letterforms, photography and interior design.

What next?
'A' Level programme students will need to undertake a further one-year Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design in order to gain the necessary experience that universities require.
