The AS course will develop your ability to appreciate the visual world, enabling you to respond in a creative and personal way. Whilst you will investigate the work of other traditional and contemporary artists, this course will allow you to autonomously develop, finding your own identity as an artist.
The A2 course builds on experiences and skills from AS, allowing you to build a greater degree of specialisation in your chosen artistic medium/s.
You will start the year working on a set project. Then, as your confidence develops, you will work on a self-directed brief, which you will design to fit within a set theme. Towards the end of the year you will have the opportunity to exhibit your work. Unit 1: Coursework. Coursework themes are set throughout the year, and will allow you to engage with a wide variety of artistic themes, techniques and materials.
Unit 2: Timed Assessment. The exam board will set a general topic area (e.g. 'Combinations & Alliances') on which you will base a project, creating work under timed conditions (8 hours). Appropriate guidance is provided during the preparation period, encouraging an independent development of intention, ideas and response.
Unit 3: Practical Work & Personal Study. In this unit you will undertake an in depth study of a chosen artist, style or idea, producing a document integrating images and words (1000 words minimum). The practical element of this unit will consist of a body of work from a self-negotiated focus, building on your strengths with materials and techniques.
Unit 4 Timed Assessment. The exam board will set a general topic area (e.g. 'Exploration & Discovery') on which you will base a project, creating work under timed conditions (12 hours). Appropriate guidance is provided during the preparation period, encouraging an independent development of intention, ideas and response. You will develop: Varied skills of independent thinking and working, learning new techniques and working with a wide range of materials. All classes will be delivered in the Art Studio at Park Lane Campus. The full A-Level qualification in Fine Art is recognised by all universities and higher education institutions, and is accorded full quota of UCAS points (required for most university entrants). Many of our students progress on to a range of Higher Education courses.
It is ideal preparation for progression onto a range of higher education art courses at Art College or University, such as degrees in illustration, animation, architecture, interior design, and fine art. However, students can also progress to a range of other courses including film, media, photography, animation, history, architecture, English and humanities. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
