AS English Language is designed for students who want to study the way language creates the vast variety of written and spoken material in our society.
You will look at a broad range of different texts, using frameworks like lexis, semantics, discourse analysis, phonetics and graphology to categorise them and show how they work on a linguistic level. You will also write your own texts, choosing from an equally wide range of options - like short stories, magazine articles, blog entries, scripts and speeches.
You will focus particularly on how language is employed in actual social contexts - like power-related situations (legal language, teacher language and so forth), gender-based interactions (the differences between the ways women and men speak) and technology-driven language (texting, the internet and emails, for example).

Course programme

The AS Year is made up of two units: ENGB1 (exam) and ENGB2 (coursework) For ENGB1 "Categorising Texts", you will sit a written examination which provides a detailed introduction to the analysis of written and spoken texts, focusing particularly on three social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender, and Language and Technology. For ENGB2 "Creating Texts", you will produce a folder of writing, with associated commentaries, in contrasting genres/purposes/audiences. In the A2 course you will learn about how the English Language has changed with time, how children develop language and how language functions in a specific context of your own choice. AS English Language will develop your awareness of how language creates specific effects and meanings and how it works to underpin the way society works. ENGB1 ("Categorising Texts") is assessed by one written examination (2 hrs in length) which is worth 60% of the AS level and 30% of the overall A level. This subject will prepare you for a degree course in language-related study at University. The skills are also transferrable to other degree courses. English Language, as a specialist form of English A level, is widely respected by employers and fits well with many of the other A level subjects that we offer at LCC. In terms of career progression, Language students should flourish in professions like journalism, script writing, publishing, legal careers and many others. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
