AS/A2 Mathematics
AS/A2 Without mathematicians, modern society wouldn't exist â€" imagine a world with no science, no engineering, no medicine, no architecture… Maths is an excellent training for the mind requiring precise and accurate work, clear logical thought and problem solving skills.We offer two routes through this Mathematics course:
- Mathematics with Statistics
- Mathematics with Mechanics
In Mathematics AS/A2 you will spend most of your time actually doing maths â€" solving problems, working in groups to solve problems together, as well as exploring new techniques and ideas. Most of the course is Core Mathematics - which is based on the algebraic topics you have studied at GCSE.
The course is designed to prepare students for academic studies involving Mathematics after college, and should be taken by students committed to studying Mathematics for two years. Students considering this as a fourth subject, or to give them a mix of subjects, are advised to consider Use of Mathematics AS level instead.
AS Course Content
The AS course consists of three equally-weighted modules:
- Core Mathematics 1
Assessment: examination 100% - Core Mathematics 2
Assessment: examination 100% These two compulsory modules cover and extend the algebra skills learnt at GCSE, and include Calculus, Logarithms, Graphs, Quadratics, Geometry and Trigonometry. - Applied Mathematics'Statistics or Mechanics (see â€OEChoosing your Module 3 option†below)
Assessment: examination 100%
A2 Course Content
The A2 course comprises a further three equally-weighted modules:
- Core Mathematics 3
Assessment: Examination: 80% & Coursework: 20% - Core Mathematics 4
Assessment: examination 100% These two compulsory modules build on the algebra skills learnt at AS, and in addition include Proof, Parametric Equations, Vectors and Differential Equations. - Applied Mathematics'Statistics or Mechanics (see â€OEChoosing your Module 3 option†below)
Assessment: 100%
Choosing your Module 3 option
Statistics covers data analysis, probability and hypothesis testing, with an emphasis on deciding what conclusions can be drawn from real world data. The approach is practical, but the course does concentrate on justifying conclusions by looking at the theory behind the practice.
Mechanics is Maths applied to Physics, dealing with force and motion. You will focus on analysing physical situations and identifying the various components involved. There is a strong emphasis on drawing clear, accurate diagrams to illustrate forces. The Mechanics option should be taken by qualified students who are taking Physics AS.
Note: If you take Further Mathematics alongside Mathematics, you will study both Mechanics and Statistics.
Is Mathematics for you?
You will enjoy and benefit from Mathematics if you:
- enjoy the challenge of thinking logically;
- prefer abstract concepts to real world applications;
- have good algebra skills;
- plan to study a course at university which will have a mathematical component.
Mathematics and your future
The study of Mathematics at this level can lead to a range of further studies and possible careers including Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Electronics, Architecture and other science subjects. It also plays an important role in economics, business and social sciences, although entry to many of these courses would generally not require Mathematics A level.
