What will I study?
Two thirds of the course is Core Mathematics. It is the doing part of the subject. Areas covered include coordinate geometry, calculus and trigonometry. The work begins where GCSE finishes. On enrolment you will be given a foundation exercise which covers algebraic topics covered at GCSE which you need to be familiar with.
One third of the course is an application module. You will choose between Statistics or Mechanics. Statistics is concerned with data handling, probability, developing on to probability distributions, correlation and regression. Mechanics is concerned with such concepts as velocity, acceleration, force, and momentum. Students studying both Maths and Physics do find mechanics helpful. It is possible to study Mechanics successfully without studying physics, however.
Advice is given at enrolment about which option to take. Most students do equally well on either option.
How is this course assessed?
The initial work given on enrolment is assessed. Some students may be identified as needing extra support in this area. The course itself is examined externally by 3 module exams in each year. You will take one module in January and two in the Summer. There is no coursework.
