What is Media Studies? The mass media is the most important way that information, ideas and entertainment are transmitted to people in the modern world. Media Studies develops the ability to analyse, question and engage with a wide range of media output, take part in production work and understand the social and industrial contexts within which the media operates. Media studied on the course are primarily television, newspapers, magazines, film, advertising and increasingly, the internet.
Will I enjoy Media Studies?
Discussion and close analysis of what we call media 'texts'; which include visual texts such as television programmes; is central to the work you will do in the classroom. You must also enjoy working independently on coursework assignments, particularly the practical production assignment which you do in Year 12. This will involve the creation of your own media production, such as short film, music video, photostory, promotional posters, magazine articles, advertisements etc using Apple Macintosh computers.
What exactly will I study?
In the first year you will:
· Learn to analyse media 'texts' (film, television, newspapers and advertising) using key concepts.
· Study in depth audience theories with regard to censorship, regulation, and social and psychological effects of the media.
· Complete a practical production coursework assignment, such as an advertising campaign or short film, using the latest digital technology.
In the second year you will:
· Study two further media industries in depth - television industry and music industry
· Write an independent coursework study based around a recent media text
· Develop the knowledge and skills needed to compare media texts both past and present, showing understanding of their context and historical background.
Does Media Studies go well with any other subject?
Media Studies goes well with English, Film Studies, Communication & Culture, or Digital Photography but can be taken alongside any combination of A Level courses suited to your aspirations.
Progression
Media Studies, in combination with other A Levels, will help to prepare and qualify you for a wide range of higher education courses. Many of our students go on to do Media degrees while others opt for a variety of other Humanities related courses.
