AS/A2 This course will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills as a performer, composer and listener. There will be instrumental lessons, opportunities to perform as a member of a group and encouragement to take part in college concerts and performances. There will also be an opportunity to take Grade 5 theory and to explore music technology. You will also be able to study both.

About this course
Five Grade Cs at GCSE in appropriate subjects including Maths or English. You need a good standard of musical ability. You need to be of Grade 4 or 5 standard (instrument or voice) and have a working knowledge of music notation. Keyboard skills are also very useful.

AS/A2 Music
AS/A2 This course will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills as a performer, composer and listener. There will be instrumental lessons, opportunities to perform as a member of a group and encouragement to take part in college concerts and performances. There will also be an opportunity to take Grade 5 theory and to explore music technology. You will also be able to study both the history of music and its development.
AS Course Content
The AS course comprises three units:
1. Performing Music 1
You will work towards a practical exam including a solo recital and a viva voce (discussion).
Assessment: Practical exam assessed by visiting examiner
2. Composing 1
You will study The Language of Western Tonal Harmony and will compose for a combination of instruments. You will also be expected to create a harmony portfolio.
Assessment: Teacher assessed portfolio
3. Introduction to Historical Study in Music
You will study a range of classical music and jazz, looking at the history of the music and including a number of prescribed works.
Assessment: Timed examination paper
A2 Course Content
The A2 course comprises a further three units:
4. Performing Music 2 (Interpretation)
You will work towards a solo recital including a vive voce (discussion).
Assessment: Practical exam assessed by visiting examiner
5. Composing 2
You will produce a portfolio of stylistic harmony exercises. You are also asked to produce a composition which will be text-based.
Assessment: Teacher assessed portfolio
6. Historical and Analytical Studies in Music
You will study programme music and popular music. You will also develop aural skills in response to the listening unit of the exam paper.
Assessment: Timed examination paper

This course is suitable for those with an interest in the subject who have had appropriate grounding. This may be through a variety of routes, such as participation in musical activities, study of an instrument, graded examinations, study of music theory and experience of music at GCSE level.
