AS / A2 Music Technology

WHY TAKE MUSIC TECHNOLOGY?
You will enjoy this course if you enjoy creating and listening to different styles of music, and wish to extend your practical music making skills using computers and the latest technology. This course can be followed alongside many other qualifications but will complement the study of A Level Music or BTEC Music in particular. On completion of this course, many students choose to progress to the wide range of specialist music technology and recording courses that are available across the country. Job roles in this sector include sound engineer, composer, acoustic engineer and music producer.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
You will complete three areas of study; The Principles and Practice of Music Technology, Popular Music Styles since 1910 and The Development of Technology based Music. Through these areas of study you will learn how to: produce musical arrangements using sequencing software (Cubase/Sibelius), develop the skills required to create multitrack audio recordings, compose and arrange music using technology and develop your listening and analysing skills.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will undertake projects that integrate a number of practical tasks, including sequencing, recording and composing. You will be expected to develop your sight-reading skills and music theory knowledge as both are essential in this area.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
70% Practical Coursework. 30% Listening Exam.

You will produce an audio CD entitled 'Music Technology Portfolio 1', containing three tracks of work in these areas; Sequenced Realised Performance (Musical score interpretation and realisation), Multi-track Recording (Recording studio operation) and Creative Sequenced Arrangement (Remixing task).

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
You will be encouraged to participate in subject-related enrichment activities and you will be given the chance to participate in a number of public performances either on stage or behind the scenes in a technical role. You will also have the opportunity to attend the regular visits, workshops and residential trips offered throughout the year.
