What will I study?

AT AS:
  • Anatomy and Physiology The skeleton, muscles, nervous system, heart, respiratory system, fitness and health and Acquisition of Skill Learning teaching, practice, motivation and the psychology of sport.
  • Practical Coursework You will develop physical skills which are assessed in two activities and produce a Personal Performance Portfolio covering strategy for improved performance.
AT A2:
  • Exercise Physiology the principles involved with energy systems, warming up, training programmes, food fuels, physical fitness and strength training.
  • Evaluating Contemporary Influences the concepts and characteristics of World Games. Whether the Olympic ideal still has a place in modern-day sport. The causes of deviance in sport and the link between sport and the law as a result. The factors that have influenced the commercialisation of modern-day sport.
Practical you will be assessed on your ability to perform in two roles within one sport selecting from either performer / coach or referee.

In theoretical lessons you will be expected to research, analyse and report on a variety of topics. You will then apply concepts learned to practical situations e.g. looking at the components of fitness and testing procedures in the classroom and then gaining physical experience of those testing procedures in the sports hall.

How is this course assessed?

At AS: 1 written examination and a practical assessment. At A2: 1 written examination, a practical assessment of two roles.

What next?

PE provides an excellent basis for further study or employment within the booming sport and leisure sector.
