AS/A2
Physical Education enables you to become increasingly physically competent by developing the skills and techniques needed to perform effectively in different types of physical activity. You will learn to apply these skills to different roles such as performer, leader and official. There is also a theoretical component to the course: studying the social, cultural and other factors that enable people to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle throughout their lives.
AS Course Content
Unit 1: Improving Performance in Physical Education
This will involve you in the practical performance of a chosen sport and will include two of the three roles: performer, coach or official.
Unit 2: Active Lifestyles and Physical Education
This is the theoretical module, which focuses on:
l lifestyle choices and factors affecting these choices
l opportunities and pathways available to those participating in physical activity
l the physiological, psychological and technical requirements for physical activity
l the role of nutrition in performance and health
l the lifestyle benefits of leading a healthy life.
A2 Course Content
Unit 1: Refining Performance
This will involve you in the practical performance of one role in one chosen sport. The possible roles are performer, coach / leader or official.
Unit 2: Performance and Participation in Physical Education
This is the theoretical module, which focuses on:
l performance analysis and evaluation of health
l health of the nation
l management of stress / anxiety and motivation
l opportunities and pathways for mass participation and excellence in UK sport
l socio-cultural factors such as class, gender, age, race and disability and how these affect opportunity, provision and esteem in physical activity
l government initiatives to encourage lifelong involvement in sport and recreation.
Assessment
There are two written examinations and two practical examinations backed up by extensive written reports.
