Who is this course for?
The science of Psychology helps you understand the thoughts and behaviour of individuals. It is an interesting, but demanding subject as research methods and statistics are at its core. As Psychology is applied to all aspects of life the course may be of relevance to people from a variety of backgrounds and professions.

What will I learn?
AS Level - cognitive psychology; memory research and its applications such as eye witness testimony. Development psychology; explanations of attachment and the effects of separation or deprivation on young children. The effects of day care are also investigated. Research methods; the different methods of investigation that psychologists implement when carrying out research. Individual Differences; explanations of abnormal behaviour. Physiological psychology; stress and its effects and how people cope with stress. Social psychology; topics of conformity and obedience and their implications in society.A2 Level -Topics in Psychology - choices are: aggression, sleep, perception, gender, cognition, relationships and intelligence. Psychopathology; the classification and diagnosis of mental disorders. Psychology in action; the psychology of addictive behaviour.

Assessment
There will be set pieces of work for you to complete throughout the course that will be assessed by your tutor. At the end of the AS level course you will be required to complete two written examinations (1 ½ hours each), and for A2 level you will be required to complete two written examinations (1 ½ hours and 2 hours).

On Completion Achievement / Progression
The course can lead on to study Psychology or a range of other subjects in university. Psychology is useful for any career which involves working with people and can also form a career path into educational psychology, criminal psychology, sports psychology or clinical psychology.

Requirement
You will need the minimum entry requirement of 4 Grade C passes or above at GCSE level to include both GCSE English at grade C or above and GCSE Maths at grade C or above. For mature students, life experience will be taken into account. Students wishing to take this subject as part of the full-time provision should complete an application form on receipt of which we will invite you to the college for an informal interview where you will have the opportunity to talk with the tutors. You are also required to take a literacy and numeracy

Assessment. If you wish to take this course on a part-time day or evening basis, please attend one of the enrolment sessions advertised on our website.
