AS/A2 Religious Studies (Philosophy of Religion and Ethics)
T he course is designed to enable you to:
Analyse the relevance of philosophical and ethical theories to society today
Critically assess different philosophical theories and their development
Use ICT to research evidence relating to philosophical issues.
Is it for me?
The course suits those who enjoy debating and discussing issues and who want to explore beliefs and contemporary issues. You should like to stretch your mind and enjoy reading and analysing texts. Assessment is exam based.
What's involved?
Philosophy
This unit introduces you to major influences on the philosophy of religion. You will look at the ancient Greek philosophers; Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and consider the influence they have had on the Judaeo-Christian concept of God. You will not be expected to have first-hand knowledge of the texts. You will examine the different arguments for the existence of God and challenges to them, including, the concept of how an all-loving God can allow the existence of natural and moral evil.
Religious Ethics
You will build on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in the philosophy unit. You will further develop your understanding of the relationship between different ethical systems and religious methods of ethical decision making. You will be encouraged to apply these ethical theories to current moral debates in society today, such as; abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, human and animal rights and embryo research.
Philosophy of Religion 2
This unit builds on the knowledge you will have gained in AS and explores three main topics. Distinctions between body and soul, different views on life after death and the concept of heaven and hell; Revelation: the concept of different forms of religious experience and a careful consideration of their relevance today and Religious Language: how the meaning of language may have different connotations when used in a religious context
Religious Ethics 2
In this unit you will study the concept of Freewill and moral responsibility and debates surrounding these issues. Conscience - the role and nature of our conscience and whether it is innate or God-given. How Christian ethics can be applied to these issues Practical ethical theories studied at AS are used at A2 to investigate issues surrounding; the environment, sex and relationships and ideas of war, peace and justice.
