Why choose English Language?
There are very few, if any, areas of our lives that do not involve using language.
Studying English Language at AS and A level will enable you to use language effectively, to learn about the structures and functions of the language we use, and to become aware of the social, historical and psychological issues which shape the ways we think, speak and write.
Expect something very different from GCSE!
Course Content
During the AS year you will be learning how to analyse spoken and written language; how children learn to talk; how conversation works; and about the relationship between the language we use and our social values. At A level you will look further into social, historical and regional variation. You will also have the opportunity to investigate a linguistic topic of your choice for a 3500 word coursework project.
Teaching and Learning Styles
Teaching is active - we make much use of discussion and group work which students use to explore their own views about language as well as those of others. Active research through investigative project work is also an important part of language study. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the work experience programme in language related areas, and to explore the links between English Language and their other academic studies.
Assessment
AS and A2 are each assessed through one coursework module and one end of year examination (see Course Guide for more details).
Progression Opportunities
Many students go on to study English Language related courses such as Linguistics or Communication Studies at university. English Language is also a very useful qualification for anybody wishing to go into primary teaching, speech therapy or journalism.
