About this course

You need to have met the standard college entry requirements of five GCSE grade C or above. Including a GCSE grade C or above in English. AS/A LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

WHAT IS ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE?
This is a pure mixture of both Language and Literature, without any coursework at AS level. You will study either prose or drama texts as well as a poetry text, you will look at the language of speech and you will complete language production work in a variety of ways. The course is based around an integrated approach to the study of both language and literature, underpinned by the notion that the study of each element supports the other. In practice, it is quite difficult to separate the different parts of the course, so we deliver them together.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE?
If you cant decide whether to do English Language or English Literature, and you still want to do English, then perhaps this is the answer. It is a natural progression from what you have studied at GCSE level. You will extend the range of your reading beyond literary texts, and learn to examine and analyse closely many types of writing, including three full texts at AS level and another 3 at A2 level. We look at the notion of audience and purpose and how they are integral to any piece of writing. You will also study the features of everyday spoken language and explore the ways we interact with each other. You also develop your own writing skills through a variety of practical and realistic writing situations, including learning how to adapt and repackage material for different readers and purposes.

USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS
It is imperative that you are interested in writing for a variety of purposes and audiences, that you enjoy reading and that you are willing to extend your reading and that you want to learn about new aspects of English.

COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT
You will usually have two teachers, and the emphasis in class will be on discussion and active explorations of a variety of texts. We will also help you develop the study skills you need to become an effective, independent student of language and literature, by exploring the issues, which arise from a combined study. In the first year of the course you will study the following areas:
  • Creative and practical writing
  • Understanding of audience and purpose
  • Study and analysis of everyday speech and its organisation
  • How values, feelings and attitudes are communicated
  • The language of rhetoric
  • The study of 3 texts, either prose or drama or a mixture of both
  • How language shapes meaning
Upon successful completion of the first year of the course you can opt to progress to the full A level where you will study the following:
  • Adaptation of texts for a new purpose and audience
  • Analysis and evaluation of audience and purpose
  • Comparison of 2 literary texts, one of which must be poetry
  • Detailed study and analysis of a non-fiction text
  • Comparative analysis of 3 unseen texts, including speech
We believe it is important for you to have a variety of experiences related to your studies. We have regular theatre and cinema trips, attend specialist conferences and visiting speakers lead workshops.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Three of the four units are assessed by examination; one unit is a coursework folder.

COURSE COMMITMENT
You will be expected to read widely around the subject and study intensively in your own time. Expect around four hours of homework per week.

COURSE COSTS
The course costs are mainly for set texts, which should be no more than 20 - 25 per year. Often books can be bought off students in the year above you. There will be one off costs for trips, e.g. to the theatre, if you wish to attend them.

PROGRESSION ROUTES
This course provides you with the facility to go on to study English at University or as the basis for many Arts and Humanities courses.
