A-level Maths provides students with a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. Maths provides a foundation for further studies in a variety of subjects including Science and Engineering. The logic and reasoning skills developed by studying A-level Maths make sure the qualification is widely respected even in non-mathematical arenas.
The modern world needs mathematicians. Maths and science are required for the continued development of our increasingly technological lives. The UK’s knowledge economy needs more mathematical skills for the financial, communication, transportation sectors and areas like genome modelling etc. Without mathematicians, we’d be in trouble!

Course programme

A-level Maths is made up of six units – three at AS and three at A2. All units are available in the June series. There are four Pure Core units which make up two-thirds of the qualification and provide the techniques in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus that form the fundamental building blocks of the subject. Mathematical applications make up the remaining third of the qualification. We offer decision maths and statistics at Leeds City College. All units are of equal weighting and are assessed by a terminal exam of 1 hour 30 minutes. AS Maths (Year one) Core 1: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration. Core 2: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration. Statistics 1: Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution. A2 Maths (Year two) Core 3: Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods. Core 4: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; vectors. Decision 1:Algorithms; algorithms on graphs; the route inspection problem; critical path analysis; linear programming; matchings. You will develop: The A Level Centre is located in our award winning £9m extension which added 60 more classrooms to Park Lane Campus.
