The Programme

11.00 Welcome and introductions

11.15 AM – 12.15 AM - What’s new in Pro Tools 9

An overview of the new features in Pro Tools 9, demonstrated on the latest Mac Pro
laptop with Snow Leopard operating system. Differences between PT9 and older
systems, and differences between PT9 and PT HD 9, will all be explained. Hardware
options and plug-ins will also be discussed.

12.15 AM – 12.30AM - Coffee Break

12.30 AM – 01.30 PM – Plug-ins & Virtual Instruments for Pro

A tour around some of the most-used professional plug-ins and virtual instruments for
Pro Tools.

Digidesign plug-ins: Instrument Expansion Pack with Structure, Strike, Velvet and other
virtual instruments; Eleven guitar amp and effects simulation; X-Form processor for time
and pitch correction; Complete Production Toolkit for Pro Tools 9; etc.
3rd-party plug-ins: Auto-Tune; Melodyne; Altiverb; etc.

01.30 PM – 2.30 PM - Lunch Break

2.30 PM – 3.30 PM - Multitrack recordings ‘deconstructed’

To demonstrate Pro Tools in action, this session will include playback
and ‘deconstruction’ of original multitrack recordings Mike has worked with.

3.30 PM – 3.45 PM - Coffee Break

3.45 PM – 4.45 PM – Working with Pro Tools 9

This session will demonstrate how to find your way around a Pro Tools session, manage
your tracks and ‘voices’ efficiently, ‘comp’ takes, and use the various edit modes to clean
up recorded tracks, move things around to enhance the arrangement, and make repairs to
any timing or pitching errors.

One of the most important things when mixing in Pro Tools is to make sure that levels
do not exceed the available headroom, causing the audio waveform to be ‘clipped’ and
the sound to be distorted. Techniques to avoid this will be demonstrated along with
suggestions about grouping tracks, setting levels, and organizing the tracks within the
mix window.

4.45 PM – 5.00 PM - Coffee Break

5.00 PM – 5.30 PM - Mastering session

It is increasingly common for mix engineers to make ‘stems’ containing mixes of the
drums, vocals, keyboards, guitars, strings, brass or other groups of instruments within a
mix. These can be supplied to the mastering engineer who can change the levels of these
stems to alter the balance of the mix without having to do a complete remix of the track at
the mastering stage.

This session will demonstrate how to create stem mixes and will show how a mastering
engineer might re-balance and process these using EQ and various ‘flavours’ of
compression to create the final ‘mastered’ mix.

5.30 PM – 6.30 PM - Drinks and Final Q & A Session

This session will allow a further opportunity for any mysteries about the recording,
editing, mixing and mastering processes to be unraveled in direct response to questions
from those attending the seminar.
