The Award is designed to provide non-nuclear sector personnel and new employees within the nuclear sector, with a foundation level of understanding of the nuclear industry and its specific requirements, into which they will be starting their employment or have joined in recent years. The Award will also benefit those in the industry who wish to have a broader awareness and gain recognition of their knowledge of the nuclear sector.

Course programme

The qualification comprises three compulsory units: Unit 1 An overview of the history and structure of the nuclear industry, industry regulation and the roles of regulatory bodies, nuclear stakeholders, security arrangements and safety culture, emergency procedures and required responses, media management arrangements. Unit 2 The principles of atomic structure, radioactive decay and ionising radiation, the detection and measurement of radiation, biological effects, reducing exposure to radiation and control of contamination. Unit 3 The nuclear fuel cycle, components and function of nuclear reactors, waste management, environmental responsibilities, decommissioning.
