Animation is one of the few media that will allow students to create worlds, populate them, develop consistent systems of cause and effect (moral, ethical and physical). These are the resources that animators use to either inform an audience for social and commercial purpose, or to immerse them in a compelling narrative, hopefully both. Studying Animation at Edinburgh will enable students to explore the fundamental principles of the discipline, and to engage with the full spectrum of production methodologies

Course programme

Course Content Year 1

You will be introduced to the theoretical and practical concepts of design through a series of collaborative projects, and the principles of animation through more specialism-focused studio projects.

Year 2

Basic principles, theories, working practices and technical instruction will be covered in set projects and exercises involving 2D and 3D work, both analogue and digital. You will take regular drawing classes as well as workshop sessions from invited industrial practitioners.

Year 3

Through set projects, electives and self-initiated work, you will develop your ideas and explore a range of techniques, thereby establishing an individual approach to your animation. You will be required to take part in appropriate live projects working for external clients. You will also have the opportunity to take part in exchange programmes with partner institutions.

Year 4

You will have developed your ability to express ideas, opinions and concerns through your practice and theory, and by the end of this year you will have planned and produced a major piece of work, in the form of a single project or a portfolio of smaller projects. You will take part in an exhibition at the ECA Degree Show, and subsequent screenings at festivals and competitions.
