    4 Years

Our unique course explores new and emerging sustainable automotive technologies (such as electric vehicles). Throughout your course, you’ll learn to use state-of-the-art tools for vehicle analysis and development such as computer-aided design, finite element, fluid dynamics and vehicle dynamics software.

You’ll also participate in Formula Student – Europe’s most established student motorsport competition. This is a valuable opportunity to apply your knowledge and gain hands-on experience.

You can apply to study for either a BEng or MEng (Master of Engineering). The MEng builds on the BEng course with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. Depending on your progress, you may have the option to switch to a BEng or MEng during your studies.

About this course

Run by internationally-recognised academics, our BEng and MEng Automotive Engineering courses will give you the expertise needed to become a professional engineer in the automotive industry, or equally provide you with the skillset to take up a career in motorsport.

Students will have access to industry-standard software and equipment, and the prestigious Formula Student competition is a central part of the course. You may also choose to take a Professional Training placement at major companies such as McLaren, Williams F1 and Rolls-Royce.

90 per cent of Surrey’s automotive engineering graduates are in a professional or managerial job within six months (Unistats).

A Professional Training placement provides you with the opportunity to develop your professional, academic and personal potential, equipping you to be adaptable, resilient, globally minded, confident, entrepreneurial and digitally savvy in the workplace. These qualities are widely recognised by employers and many of our students are offered employment on graduation by their placement provider.

The Professional Training placement year gives our students an insight into their subject and career potential, and early access to professional experience. It can be invaluable in developing work-based skills and helping them secure a graduate career.

Recent graduates from the automotive and mechanical engineering courses have entered employment in roles such as:

Automotive Design Engineer, McLaren Automotive
Graduate Vehicle Development Engineer, Gordon Murray Design
PVT Engineer, Jaguar Land Rover
Graduate Engineer, Tata Steel
Graduate Mechanical Engineer, JCA Engineering
Graduate Systems and Test Engineer, Lockheed Martin UK
Reliability Engineer, ExxonMobil.

BEng (Hons): AAB-ABB.

Applicants taking the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass.

MEng: AAA-AAB.

Applicants taking the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass.

Required subjects: Mathematics at grade A and Physics.
