Course programme

Course Content The BEng ProgrammeThe BEng is the more traditional way of studying engineering and involves three years of study, or four if you choose the Year in Industry option. Not all engineers wish to seek chartered status – you may be interested in other aspects of research for example, or a career in the Forces, the financial sector, or may prefer consultancy work – in these cases the BEng degree may prove to be a more appropriate choice for you than the MEng. You can still obtain Chartered Engineer status with a BEng degree, but bear in mind that the Engineering Institutions may require further studies to be undertaken. The BEng is highly regarded by employers. Both the BEng and the MEng degrees are fully accredited by the Institutions of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Energy. The Year in Industry ProgrammeThe Sandwich programme is an enhancement of either the MEng or the BEng programme as it incorporates a year of industrial placement. This placement takes place after you have completed your first two years of engineering study, so the MEng programme takes five years to complete and the BEng programme takes four years. The strong reputation of the School enables us to place students with good companies. Among the advantages of the sandwich programmes is that the practical experience helps you to relate our teaching to current engineering practice, and many employers prefer graduates with practical experience. At Cardiff, we place a great emphasis on flexibility, and appreciate that you may be unsure of your future and which path to choose. If you are unable to decide which degree programme is the right one for you, you can change your course at a later date.
