Course Content

The BA English and German is a joint degree and therefore your studies will be divided equally between the two subjects. In English, you have the freedom to choose modules up to 60 credits (half your total workload) in each of your second and final years. The only set requirement is that every student studies some pre-1800 and some post-1800 literary modules.

The third year of the course is spent in Germany. This year will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have, bringing about a dramatic improvement in your spoken language as well as your knowledge of life in Germany. This is an academic year and means at least eight months spent abroad. You can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce.

All our language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit Free Elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
