The most widely spoken language of the European Union, German is correspondingly popular at Hull. In your third year, you can study in Germany at a partner university or you can choose to work as an English language assistant in a school. Course programme
In joint honours degrees at the University of Hull, both subjects figure equally, meaning an equal number of modules are studied from each subject. You will take six modules a year, including some core modules in the first and second years, with greater choice as you progress.
German modules include two core language modules and one culture module each year. Culture modules include: The Making of Modern Germany Representing Germany: Gender, Nation and Identity The 'Wende' in Text and Film. Philosophy modules include: Introduction to Philosophy History of Western Thought Philosophical Texts The Buddhist Tradition The Hindu Tradition.
The third year of the degree is spent in Germany. This will probably be an incredibly exciting and challenging experience and you will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language. You can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce for the full academic year. At least 8 months must be spent abroad.
All the language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit Free Elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
