Course Content

In BA German and Religion, each subject figures equally. As a student of German, you will be studying both language and culture modules. Three core German modules are taken in the first year: two language modules and a culture module. The language module comprises three classes per week. In the Religion element of the first-year programme, students study key modules in Introduction to World Religions, Christian Tradition and Faith in Media.

In the second year, students take a culture module that concentrates on Representing Germany: Gender, Nation and Identity. In the final year the culture module concentrates on the 'Wende' in Text and Film. The second and final years in Religion offers a range of optional modules that develop skills in theological and moral reasoning, as well as modules that provide students with methodologies for exploring cultural expressions of religion. In the final year there is the opportunity to complete a dissertation in Religion.

The third year provides the opportunity to study abroad. Through studying abroad, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken language, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into German life. The 'year' refers to an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad.

All our language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit free elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
