Course programme
This course allows you to combine the study of history through a wide-ranging and popular choice of modules, with a particular perspective on the human past provided by archaeology. A mixture of core and optional modules introduces you to British and international archaeology, as well as the main skills and technologies that archaeologists use, including information and communications technology such as GIS (geographic information systems).
There are compulsory field work elements, including a three-week training excavation in the summer at the end of the first year, progressing towards a module on field methods in Year 2, reflecting on the excavation.
The range of optional modules in your first two years is extensive, and includes Mayans, Aztecs and Incas, Roman Britain, Raiders, Traders and Crusaders, Death and Dying in the Middle Ages, Early Modern Gender, Elizabeth I, America's Wars in Asia, The Third Reich and Animal Histories. This broad module choice continues into your final year, when you will undertake a research-based dissertation on a topic of your choice, along with a range of optional modules including The Archaeology of the Castle, The Parisi: Iron Age and Roman East Yorkshire, Edward I, The Third Reich and The 1960s.
A variety of methods are used to assess your progress, including essays, projects, documentary exercises, examinations and assessed presentations, with detailed feedback provided on all assessed work.
