Course programme
In general, the first year of your course is largely devoted to fundamental methods, theories and knowledge in the subjects. In subsequent years, you move on to more advanced study and have the chance to gain detailed knowledge in subject areas of your choice or in areas specific to topics within history and economics.
Since History takes up the majority of your degree, you will study more History modules than Economics over the course of your studies.
In your first year you will choose one of the following core modules: Representing the Past in Film or Exploring the Past. You will also choose from a range of optional modules that explore big themes over specific time frames. These modules cover topics as varied as medieval life, modern-day immigration, Tudor queens and the USA. Economics modules will introduce you to fundamental business concepts as part of a shared first year with all Business School degrees which includes academic and professional skills, business economics, business management, and accounting and finance.
The core module for History in the second year is Thinking About the Past, introducing you to the development of historical thought and theory. Your economics modules focus on micro- and macroeconomics.
In your third year you take a special subject investigating a particular period or theme in-depth and undertaking a dissertation on a related topic. The rest of the course is made up of your own choices from a broad range of optional modules something that our students really appreciate. Modules currently include (to name but a few) Edward I, Death and Dying in the Middle Ages, The Archaeology of the Castle, Early Modern Gender, War in European History, The British Empire, The Third Reich, Animal Histories and Americas Wars in Asia. A full list of options can be found on our departmental web pages.
