Course Content

Italian and American Studies options figure equally. In your first year, you will study Italian Language Skills and Modern Italy: History, Culture, Identity along with modules in American society, culture, history and literature, from the 16th century to the present day. In your second and fourth years, you will select six modules per year from a wide range of module choice, allowing you to develop your interests and tailor your degree to you. These include Gender, Power and Politics in the Americas, Post War Italian History and Film, Cold War Culture, Italian History and Culture from the Enlightenment to the Present (1750-2000), American Art 1900-1940, Lies and Whispers in Italian Texts, the Civil Rights movement and Hollywood and 1950s America.

You can also choose to study an officially recognised teaching qualification through the Trinity CertTESOL module (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and undertake an extended research project in your fourth year.

Your third year is spent abroad and counts for 10% of your overall degree. It gives you the wonderful opportunity to experience Italian culture and society and improve your relevant language skills.

All our language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit Free Elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offer the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
