The English courses offer a high degree of flexibility. This programme encourages you to explore language and literature in a social context. You will study the relationship between language and literature, alongside politics, journalism and film. Using literary texts from the medieval period to the present day, you will examine the ways in which language has the ability to divide or bring communities together, and the potential to shape our interpretation of history, culture and society.

Course programme

Course Content

The staff use a variety of teaching methods, teaching in lectures and in small seminar groups to provide opportunities for interactive learning and active engagement. You will study the equivalent of six modules per year, including The Story of English, Literature and Culture in the 19th Century, Language, Journalism and Media, Language Teaching and Learning, Film and the Moving Image, Shakespeare and His Contemporaries, and Language, Literature and the Law.

In your first year you will study core modules in Language, Power and Society, Language Acquisition and Development and Stylistics. You can choose two further modules from: Creative Writing Skills, an Introduction to Linguistics, Patterns of Language, an Introduction to Modernist Fiction, and a free elective from a different discipline.

The choice of modules becomes wider as the course progresses. In the final year, you will produce a supervised 10,000-word dissertation on a topic of your choice. You will be assessed by a variety of methods: exams, essays, presentations, reports and the dissertation.
