Course Content

You will study a total of six modules over your foundation year including at least two with your home department. These have been designed to complement each other and to address the specific learning competencies that you will need at degree level, such as independent study techniques; communication and language skills; and information technology capabilities, in addition to a general introduction to study in the Humanities.

If you take one language, you follow two core language modules, one culture module in the language of your choice, two interdisciplinary modules and a free elective. If taking two languages, you follow two-thirds of your modules in your chosen languages (a third in each language), with the remaining third devoted to culture options in your chosen language areas. In Year 1, for example, you can choose from modules including: Revolutions in French Culture and Society • The Making of Modern Germany • The Modern Hispanic World • Post-War Italian History and Film. The course also allows you the freedom to substitute a free elective for a culture module.

All the language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit Free Elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offer the largest Free Elective Programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A-level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
