Course programme

Course Content

The degree programme is taught within a modular framework, which gives you great flexibility of choice. All modules are assigned a credit value, with a total of 360 credits of study. In each year, students usually split the 120 credits between the two semesters. One year of study leads to a certificate (120 credits), or a diploma after two years (240 credits) if you decide not to go any further.

In your first year you will take two core Film Studies modules: Reading the Screen; and Screen Nations; and for your third module you can choose from: American Film and Society; The Craft of Filmmaking; or a free elective. The three core Philosophy modules are: Introduction to Philosophy I (Moral Philosophy); Introduction to Philosophy II (epistemology, metaphysics and Philosophy of Mind); and History of Western Thought.

In your second and third years you can develop your interests in philosophy and film studies equally through a wide range of module choices including: Moral Philosophy; Analysing Television Drama; 20th Century Philosophy; Landmarks of World Cinema; American Alternative Cinema; Theories of Responsibility; Disney Studies; and a screen production project. In your final year, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation in a topic of your choice.
