This programme has been designed to provide you with the specialist knowledge and expertise required for a professional career. Through the application of the essential facts, concepts, theories and principles of computer and network technology, and its underpinning science and mathematics, together with practical skills acquired through work carried out in laboratories and workshops, you will be able to synthesise solutions and formulate designs for engineering problems. You will benefit from a number of PC laboratories used for teaching and open access, as well as flexible laboratory laboratory space where you will build PC systems and networks, and control devices such as robots and remote sensors. You will also have the opportunity to work on projects with other students, for example, through designing an on-board computer system for the Formula Student racing car.

Course programme

Course Content
  • Year 1

    Year 1 begins with team-based activities including building PCs, racing robots and making a short film. You will then be introduced to the principles of computer systems design, construction and operating systems and the basics of installing and configuring local area networks.

  • Year 2

    In Year 2 you will investigate computer systems across a range of hardware and software platforms. You will learn about the standards, operation and performance of computer networks, including wireless communications technologies.

  • Year 3

    If you opt for the four year sandwich route your third year will be spent on placement.

    In your final year you will investigate the design and evaluation of both embedded and modern high performance computing systems, analysing current trends and security measures and the technologies used in computer communication networks. The final year also includes a large individual project of your choice, in which you can showcase your skills and knowledge.
