Course Content
  • Year 1

    Counselling and Psychotherapy IThis unit offers an introduction to the theory, research and practice in counselling and psychotherapy. Curriculum content includes:
    • Introduction to key therapeutic approaches (theory, research and practice)
    • The counselling process
    • Mental health, ethics and human rights
    • Personal development and reflective practice

    Practitioner Knowledge and SkillsThis unit will be structured around the four key areas of competency outlined by the BPS for chartered psychologists. It aims to introduce and build key skills and competencies required by psychologists. It is anticipated that this unit will be shared with the new BSc Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy course. In brief the unit will encompass:
    • Conducting applications and interventions – evaluating existing interventions and considering and evaluating their applications
    • Research – designing, implementing, analysing and evaluating psychology research
    • Communicating with other professionals – building communication (written and oral), team working, problem solving and decision making skills
    • Training other professionals – planning and conducting training tasks with other students

  • Year 2

    Counselling SkillsThis unit is practice-based and aims to provide students with a grounding in counselling skills. Curriculum content includes:
    • Empathic listening and developing a therapeutic attitude
    • Introduction to the core conditions in humanistic counselling
    • Exploring meaning, emotion and sense-making
    • Personal development and reflective practice

  • Year 3

    Counselling and Psychotherapy IIThis unit will build on the unit in Year 1 and develop knowledge and understanding of:
    • Therapeutic approaches (theory research and practice)
    • Psychological assessment in therapy
    • Practice contexts for therapeutic psychology (exploring employment and further training opportunities)
    • Personal development and reflective practice

    Counselling and Psychotherapy DissertationFor their final year dissertation, students on the BSc Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy route will undertake a research project with a focus on therapeutic psychology.
