Course Content

In Year One, all students, take three core modules:

  • Introduction to Psychology: providing a critical overview of psychological perspectives with particular attention to social and developmental issues.
  • Key Ideas in Social Science: tracing the origins of social scientific theories and introducing the work of key thinkers in a range of social science disciplines.
  • Introduction to Social Science Research: introducing to the principles and skills that underpin social science research.

Students choose three more modules from a selection that provides introductions to sociology, criminology, education, and social policy.

In Years Two and Three, there continue to be a number of core modules, in which students will consolidate and deepen their understanding of issues, theories and methods in psychology.

Year Two modules include:

  • Human Development
  • Current Debates in Social Psychology
  • Individual Differences and Personhood
  • Social Research Methods

Students choose two more modules from a selection across the social sciences. You will be guided to consider choosing modules to best suit your particular pathway with future career choices in mind.

In Year Three, students must undertake a dissertation project in which they will design and conduct a small scale research project under the supervision of a member of academic staff. They will also undertake a module in Learning, Biology, and Cognition as well as at least one of the following:

  • Self, Identity and Culture
  • Advanced Social Psychology

The remainder can be selected across the social sciences.

Students will also be able to choose from a selection of specialist modules that provide in-depth knowledge in particular areas of interest in Criminology, Education, Sociology and Social Policy. Our modules reflect the ongoing research work of academic staff within the School.
