Course programme
Course Content Much of your study will be field and research based; however, you will also have regular lectures, tutorials and seminars. Online resources are available to support and supplement your studies.Year 1The first year consists mainly of core modules as you develop the necessary groundwork before specialising within the subject. Diversity of Life, Ecology & Evolution, Earth & Environment and the residential field course module Practical Ecology underpin the programme together with a Core Skills module. Dive Training is an exciting and popular choice as one of our optional modules, or could choose to study Global Environmental Issues.Year 2You start to specialise in your subject. Core modules such as Marine Biology & Oceanography, Intertidal Ecology and Aquatic Zoology create the backbone of your degree, but you may choose to supplement your skills with options such as GIS, Fish Ecology or Conservation Biology. A more advanced Core Skills module provides you with the skills you need for study, and builds confidence to undertake your own research in your final year.Year 3You choose to undertake a research project in a subject area of interest or undertake a work placement module in school or industry. A choice of destinations is usually available in the optional Field Studies module, however you take Aquatic Resource Management as your core module as it is essential to your overall degree. Depending on your interests, you can select from a range of specialised modules, for example Marine & Environmental Law, Current Biology, Environmental Impact Assessment and Polar Systems.
