Course programme

Course Content Foundation Year The foundation year is designed to provide you with the scientific knowledge and study skills you will need to be successful in your degree studies. It aims to build your confidence, effectiveness and motivation alongside more traditional study skills in your first semester. Don't be put off by the thought of exams, as help is available to those who are unfamiliar with exams or who haven't sat an exam for a long time.

Psychology accounts for 70% of the modules you will study during this degree. On graduation, you will be eligible to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society.

Year One In your first year you will develop a wide-ranging understanding of all of the core areas of psychology as defined by the BPS, including social psychology; developmental psychology; cognitive psychology; biological psychology; personality and individual difference; conceptual and historical issues in psychology; and research methods. Year Two You will build on your knowledge and skills by continuing to explore the core areas of psychology in greater depth and engaging in further practical work. You will learn through large-group lectures, tutorials, practical group work and computer workshops. You will be assessed through written essays, reports and examinations. Year Three You will have the opportunity to specialise in those areas of psychology that interest you or will assist you in pursuing a career route. In the first semester you will choose two modules from the applied psychological career routes, selected from Health Psychology; Educational Psychology; Work Psychology; Forensic Psychology; Neuropsychology; and Sports Psychology. These modules are taught through large-group lectures and assessed using case studies, essays and examinations.

In semester two you will be asked to choose two modules from our specialist research-focused special options. This will include diverse subjects such as the Social Brain and Autism; Educational Testing; the Neuropsychology of Ageing and Dementia; and the Evolution of Animal Behaviour.

These modules are taught through small-group classes, seminars and presentation groups and assessed through a range of written essays, reports and examinations. Criminology modules introduce theories of crime and society, the criminal justice process and social research methods.

In Year 3, all students will have the opportunity to access employment skills training workshops, careers talks and visits to prepare for graduation.
