In Year 1 you will, through Study and Employability Skills, develop and build on the necessary research and information technology skills required in a qualification at honours degree level and to work effectively in the industry. Introduction to Leisure and Tourism sets the scene for the course and examines the tourism phenomenon through the core concepts involved. Global Travel Destinations examines a variety of tourism destinations from around the world and investigates what makes them popular and successful with the tourist. This module also introduces the role of the travel trade in the industry.
Contemporary Tourism Markets brings both a topical and international flavour to your study by examining niche markets and emerging/growing forms of tourism (such as film tourism and sports tourism). Introduction to Management provides you with key knowledge and skills in relation to working as part of an organisation today. If you select the optional module, Food and Wine Tourism, it will provide the opportunity to study this interesting growth area, investigating a range of the world’s cuisine and wine regions. Alternatively, Consumer Behaviour examines the importance of the consumer to the tourism industry.

In Year 2 Transportation Operations in Tourism focuses on the exciting area of airline and airport management in addition to other transport sectors. You will cover core managerial modules such as Marketing for Services, Human Resource Issues and Accounting Studies and then have a choice between Landscape Change and Tourism or Corporate Events.

Year 3 comprises a national or international 48 week paid work placement in a sector of the tourism industry and is selected in conjunction with the placement tutor. During this year you undertake additional placement related duties. Some students use this period as an opportunity to travel and work with internationally based companies such as CIE Tours, Walt Disney World (Florida, USA) and Aer Lingus (Newark, Boston & Los Angeles) or opt to be UK based with local district councils and tourist authorities as well as the visitor attractions sector.

In year 4, the specialist modules such as eBusiness Strategy examine the important area of digital marketing and commerce and will develop your knowledge and skills in areas such web design and planning, social media marketing strategy and mobile app development as applied to the field of travel and tourism. Tourism Planning Development and Management explores key planning issues at a number of important levels, whilst Contemporary Issues in Leisure and Tourism covers the most topical issues of the day that are affecting the industry and the tourist. You also have the opportunity to study Festival and Cultural Tourism and undertake either a Research Paper in an area of topical interest or develop a Business Plan on a concept you feel passionate about. You can then specialise further in an area of management of interest to you by selecting one of the following -Services Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Management Accounting or Services in Context.
