The programme enjoys strong relationships with service users and carers and a range of statutory and voluntary agencies. You will experience high-quality placements which offer excellent learning opportunities and support in practice. You will also have the unique opportunity to apply for a placement in the Universitys own voluntary social work agency, the Family Assessment and Support Unit (FASU), which was awarded one of the Queens Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education for its innovations in practice learning.

Course Content In the first year of the full-time course you study:
  • Human Development Across the Life Course
  • Social Work and Society
  • Becoming a Research-Minded Practitioner
  • Social Work and the Law
  • Theoretical Foundations of Practice
  • Practice Skills Development 1.
In year 2 you will complete your first placement (70 days) and study:
  • Understanding the Contexts of Service Users' Lives
  • Practice Skills Development 2
  • Mental Health and Social Work
  • Social Work with Adults
  • Social Work with Children and Families.
In your third year you will study one of these specialist options:
  • Social Work and Substance Misuse
  • Social Work Loss
  • Dying and Bereavement
  • Working with Young Offenders.
You will also complete your second placement (100 days) and study the core modules: Understanding the Contexts of Social Work Practice; and Practice Skills Development 3.
