Course Content

English figures equally with Spanish in this degree. As a joint student, you take three core first-year modules: English Landmark Texts, Introduction to Renaissance Literature, and Introduction to Literary Studies. You take two core Spanish language modules each year and a core Spanish culture option. You choose English modules up to 60 credits (half your total workload) in each of your second and final years. The only limitation is that we require every student to read some pre-1800 and some post-1800 literature.

The third year of the course is spent in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country. It will probably be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences you will ever have. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken Spanish, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the life of the country you visit. The 'year', incidentally, is an 'academic year' and means at least eight months spent abroad. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce.

You have the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit free elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers a large free elective programme in 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post A level. The latter allows incredible flexibility and adaptability to employment demands.
