•Learn cinematic codes and the conventions of film storytelling, with a grounding in narrative theory.
•Study a variety of films across a range of different genres, periods and countries in state-of-the-art cinema facilities.
•Develop research skills with an emphasis on how they can be applied to future careers.

About this course

Learn to analyse films as well as cinema's industrial development, changing production, distribution and exhibition practices and leading theoretical frameworks.

You also have the opportunity to undertake a range of activities related directly to future employment across a number of industries, such as film journalism, film marketing, and management of film festivals.

This must include at least two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications. For example:BCC at A Level.DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.A combination of qualifications, which may include AS Levels, EPQ and general studies

Course programme

In lectures you gain knowledge and understanding of the subject. In seminars and workshops you participate in discussion, presentations and writing exercises, developing communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to think and respond quickly and creatively to questions and ideas. Our modules include weekly screenings, either in our own cinema, The Void, or at Sheffield's leading art cinema, the Showroom, with whom we have a long-standing partnership.

During the course you have the opportunity to engage with a range of volunteering opportunities and placements at film festivals (such as DocFest, Celluloid Screams and Sensoria), as well as participate at film events (such as running film clubs and screenings). Students also publish a film magazine, The Void, and participate, as both presenters and production crew, in our own weekly radio programme, The Film Show, on Sheffield Live!

Field trips

Alongside taught sessions, your learning is expanded by trips off-campus (previous trips have included the British Film Institute, the National Science and Media Museum , local cinemas, and the Berlin Film Festival ) as well as a variety of guest lecturers and speakers including, leading film directors, script writers, film composers and film journalists.
