BA (Honours) International Business Management
Level 1 The Organisational Environment This module will introduce the student to business structure and purpose. It will look at structure governance and ethics. It will develop knowledge and understanding of the business environment and the influences these have on organisations and key personnel within the business. Applied Financial Accounting This module will introduce the underlying principles, concepts and regulations relating to financial accounting in an international context. This will enable the student to understand the context, purpose and qualitative aspects of financial information. It will introduce the tools necessary for the student to become technically proficient in the use of double-entry accounting techniques and the preparation of basic financial statements for sole traders, partnerships and incorporated entities. Business Planning and Decisionmaking This module is an introduction to the discipline of management accounting. The module aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of how to prepare and process basic cost and quantitative information to aid management in planning, controlling and decision-making. These skills can be used in a variety of business contexts. Corporate and Business Law This module is designed to introduce the student to the English legal system and sources of law. In particular it will study those areas which underpin the day-to-day business transactions. This will include the law of obligations including contract and tort, employment law and human rights legislation It will then develop a detailed knowledge of company law so that a student will be able to understand the framework for the formation and constitution of companies and the legal requirements for their successful management. Level 2 Human Resource Management This module aims introduces students to both the theoretical basis for Human Resource Management (HRM) and the range of activities covered by the function. It will also explore the role that HRM plays in the strategic planning and development of domestic and multi-national organisations. Performance Management The module focuses on strengthening abilities in applying and analysing management accounting techniques. There will be a study of both qualitative and quantitative information. This information will be applied to the management tasks of planning, decision-making, performance evaluation and control. Marketing The module aims give students a thorough understanding of the process of Marketing and how it fits into an organisation's overall management and planning process. The emphasis will be on the role that marketing can play in implementing and controlling the marketing planning process at both a domestic and international level. Alternative approaches in the use of the marketing mix will be discussed, analysed and evaluated looking at both the short and long-term organisation and market demands. Information for Business This module is distinguished by an emphasis on applied knowledge and practical skills for aspiring managers. It is intended to equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to utilise information systems to meet various business objectives and to make a positive impact in the workplace. It integrates two complementary parallel learning streams. Level 3 Applied Financial Management The focus of the module is the three fundamental financial management decisions of investing, financing and dividend policy. Investing decisions are considered firstly in terms of long-term investment appraisal and secondly in terms of controlling the investment in working capital. Financing decisions are considered from the point of view of both the recipient and the provider of finance. From the recipients viewpoint there is a study of the sources of business finance, the cost of this finance and other factors which affect the type of finance selected to be used by a business. From the providers viewpoint there is a study of the models used to value both equity and debt finance including a consideration of possible methods used for the valuation of a business. Business in an international context The module analyses and evaluates the important issues within international business such as globalisation and the rise of the power of the multinational enterprise. It begins by identifying some important patterns and trends in international business activity. The factors influencing the firm's decision as to the degree of internationalisation and the methods adopted are considered, as is the theoretical and institutional framework within which international business must operate. External challenges to the international firm are examined and possible internal responses to these challenges are evaluated, including strategic, human resource and marketing responses. Corporate Governance and Ethics This module will provide students with a developed understanding of corporate governance, building on earlier modules and explain the function of corporate governance in effective management and control of organisations and resources. It will also evaluate the role of accountants in controlling and mitigating risk. Issues will be considered in an international context. Business Analysis The major project module (integrated case study) allows students to engage in a substantial piece of individual research work based on a real world case study. From a core base of information on the organisation, the individual will need to design and complete research around the core subject. Course length and start dates
LCA offers students the option of studying over two or three semesters each year, thereby giving students the oportunity to complete their degree in two or three years. Students study two papers per semester.
