BA (Hons) Applied Studies (Creative Digital Media) (Top-up) Overview

The BA (Hons) Applied Studies (Creative Digital Media) recognises the versatility needed for creative practitioners to be well equipped in a competitive industry and provides opportunities to explore innovative approaches to working within digital media environments.

The programme provides the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in the three main areas of digital design: interactive media, time-based media and 2D media and print.

These areas incorporate web design, mobile apps, interface design, physical computing (Arduino), 3D / 2D animation, film and motion design, digital image manipulation, digital illustration and graphic design. In addition to this, you will be required to complete an independent research investigation into digital design practice, allowing you to explore individual specialisms and specific technologies.

This course is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 240 credits on a relevant HND, with a minimum of a merit profile
  • Other relevant Level 5 qualification (normally 240 credits at a minimum of a merit grade, or equivalent)

We normally require three GCSEs at grade C or above, to include English language and Maths. English and Maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment methods are used; however, they are all coursework-based. You will undertake coursework not just for assessment purposes but to consolidate and apply learning as part of the learning strategy for the modules. Owing to the practical nature of the subject, most modules are summatively assessed in part via a portfolio or design presentation to enable you to demonstrate your creative abilities. An essential skill at level 6 is the ability to critically evaluate and reflect. To ensure that these skills are developed, you will also be required to submit a range of reflective statements and evaluative reports based on your portfolio, design outcomes and associated learning experiences.

What does the course lead to?

The programme will prepare you for a variety of digital design career opportunities and will allow you to generate a professional portfolio relevant for prospective employers.
