The BA (Hons) Applied Studies (Theatre) recognises the versatility needed for theatre practitioners to be well equipped in a competitive industry. It provides opportunities to explore innovative, as well as modern and historical approaches to production and performance, and enables the development of high levels of skill in these areas. During the programme, you will develop a wide range of disciplines through dramaturgy, classical theatre, innovative performance styles, and original performance development.

This course is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be auditioned and invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

To start this course, you will need to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 240 credits on a relevant foundation degree with a profile of merit/50%.
  • At least 240 credits on a relevant HND, with a merit profile.
  • Other relevant Level 5 qualification (normally 240 credits at merit grade, or equivalent).

We normally require three GCSEs at grade C or above to include English language and maths: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Applied Studies (Theatre) (top-up) award or other programme.

This is a one year full-time course. Attendance is normally 12 hours over three days a week, with additional hours where you will be engaged in self-directed study. Participation in some evening performances also forms a necessary part of the course. There may also be sessions and studyshops held in the early evenings. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and study outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

All assessment is coursework-based and will consist of public performances, critical evaluations, portfolios and written reports. The Applied Practice and the Applied Research modules both require you to work on a project - the former being collaborative.

What does the course lead to?

On completion you will gain the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil a variety of professional roles in theatre, education, performance, production, journalism and playwriting.

What will I study?

You will study the following modules:

  • Applied Practice (double module)
  • Applied Research
  • Applied Devised Theatre
  • Shakespeare in Performance 2
  • Innovation Theatre

Module titles may change.

What can I go on to study?
  • Upon successful completion of this award, you could progress onto the MA in Humanities (incorporating PG Cert/PG Dip) or the MA Writing for Performance at the University of Derby, subject to entry requirements.
  • Alternatively, you may pursue postgraduate studies in acting or theatre at a wide range of universities or drama schools, subject to entry requirements.
  • Otherwise, employment opportunities are broad and could include professional roles in theatre education, performance, production and playwriting.
