About this course


The BA (Hons) Business Administration and Management (top-up) degree has been developed in close association with employers and professional bodies. It is designed for those who wish to continue their education and build upon the knowledge and understanding gained from HND or foundation degree study.


Successful completion of this course will enable you to be qualified to seek employment in the general field of business and management. Previous graduates have gained employment in business administration and business disciplines including Marketing, Finance and Human Resource Management. Additionally, graduates have secured career progression and promotion in Management including Supervisory and Assistant Management levels or, graduate schemes for Tesco, the NHS and financial sector.

You must have a minimum of 240 credits that have been achieved from a foundation degree or the HND in Business at University Centre St Helens or achieved at a comparable college or university that has modules that correlate with the course.

What will I study?

Year 1

This one-year course aims to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and transferable skills essential for leading and managing in the future work environment relevant to the performance of organisations in the 21st century. It will build on your prior knowledge and understanding gained in general business and management qualifications allowing you to gain graduate status. Your understanding and critical awareness of general management and administration and the role of managers, leaders and administrators in all types of organisations will be developed and explored.
Staff have extensive experience within a wide range of interests reflecting all areas of business, management and administration. The top-up degree will seriously enhance your employability with employers.
During the course of study, you will acquire the leadership, operational and administration skills you need for a truly successful management career in business.

Year 1 (Level 6)

BU6401 Managerial Decision Making and Change (20 credits)

Managerial decision making and change focusses on all aspects of decision making and their functions in meeting managerial and corporate objectives. You will be required to gain a full awareness of the managerial decision making process and the impact that information technology, knowledge and change has on this process.

BU6402 Managing Quality and Performance (20 credits)

Managing quality and performance examines the roles and responsibilities of managers within business operations; exploring the corporate, strategic and operational approaches relating to quality and performance management. It has a particular focus on how quality and performance impacts on the employee at an operational level.

BU6403 Strategic Management (20 credits)

Strategic management examines the role of managers and administrators in organisations that have a strategic role. It will provide you with an awareness of the key strategic management approaches to help you deliver both short and long term aims/goals/objectives for the organisation and through the use of strategic models, guide the organisation in the correct strategic direction.

BU6405 Leadership (20 credits)

Leadership is designed to provide you with an understanding of the challenges faced by those involved in leading and renewing organisations in increasingly complex and dynamic global operating environment. You will be introduced to models, theories and research in areas of strategic leadership practice and decision-making. Techniques for analysing organisations, their structures and interrelationships will be introduced and developed over the course of the module.

BU6407 Extended Research Project (20 credits)

Extended research project is designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop and extend your critical thinking within the domain of self-study. The module will focus on an aspect of business and you are required to undertake primary research on a business related topic. You will attend lectures and individual tutorials. Lectures will be used to deliver key concepts, ideas, theories and examples. Tutorials will be used for formative assessment and feedback whereby you will have the opportunity to discuss your work with tutors. The assessments for the module will allow you the opportunity to explore key concepts and theories whilst developing a deep appreciation of a topic of your choice. The learning and teaching strategy for the module will allow you to develop both subject specific knowledge and key skills, in particular research and autonomous learning.

Additional information

Assessment will take place via summative assignments/reports. There are two components for each module equating to 4,000 words. The extended research project is 8,000 words.
