Course programme

Overview

The BA (Hons.) is a qualification for those who have normally achieved either a Foundation Degree or HND in a subject relating to children and young people, and who are now looking to complete a full degree programme at level 6.  The course can be used to enhance career opportunities in the children's sector and is relevant to those professionals working in the 0-8 years age range in a variety of settings, including nurseries and schools.  It will encourage you to explore and critique other perspectives and pedagogies.  The course covers many interesting and relevant topics such as:

  • international perspectives on childhood and education
  • concepts of professionalism
  • contemporary issues in childhood

Students will also develop their research skills through a specialist module delivered in semester 1 which will prepare them for their dissertation, a major independent research project based on a topic of the student's choice.

Entry Requirements

  • A level 5 qualification (normally a Foundation Degree or HND) in a Childhood Studies related subject, and
  • at least two GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language (or equivalent level 2 qualifications)
  • Maths at level 2 is desirable but not essential upon entry

Before enrolling on the course, students who wish to pursue professional post-graduate qualifications, e.g. courses which lead to Early Years Teacher Status or Qualified Teacher Status, will be advised to consult guidelines published by the Teaching Agency describing entry criteria to these programmes.  Students who express an interest in studying a GCSE alongside their BA (Hons.) will be supported to do this through referral to the relevant college department.
