Course programme

BA (Hons) Criminal Justice (Top-up) Overview

The programme has been developed to include elements of professional practice and, where appropriate, relevant visits and talks will be included with a range of sector-specific professionals. This aim is to provide students with the relevant skills to enter employment or to progress onto post-graduate study.

The course is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 240 credits on a relevant foundation degree with a profile of merit or equivalent.
  • At least 150 credits on a relevant HND, with a merit profile.
  • Other relevant Level 5 qualification (normally 240 credits at merit grade, or equivalent).

We also normally require GCSE English and maths (or equivalent) at grade C or above.

Please note that GCSE maths or equivalent is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Criminal Justice (top-up) award or other programme.

You will also be required to undertake a self-funded Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to undertaking this course.

This is one year full-time course. Attendance is normally 12 hours over two days a week and the completion of a study placement if you are not employed in an appropriate setting.
You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and study outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be based on coursework and will include live project briefs, a research project, written assignments and critical reflections. Some assessments will be linked to a work-related context enabling you to apply your learning to the work place.

What can I go on to study?
  • Upon successful completion of the course, you may wish to study a Master's qualification such as the MSc Criminal Investigation or the MSc Cybercrime and E-Investigation at the University of Derby subject to meeting minimum entry requirements. You may also wish to study a relevant subject at another institution, subject to entry requirements.
  • Alternatively, you may seek employment in related services such as the prison and probation services, drugs advisory clinics, youth offending teams, community work and working with victims, witnesses and offenders. This list is not exhaustive.
  • Those interested in the police service are encouraged to join the Specials as part of their programme of study.
