The BA (Hons) Criminal Justice top-up degree is a multi-disciplinary subject and has been designed to cover a wide spectrum of subject related modules.

The course aims to develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of crime and criminal justice through the delivery of a variety of modules. Specific modules, including policing and prisons, will provide insight into the historical and contemporary workings of both these services. The crime and justice practitioner module will consider the importance of multi-agency working within the criminal justice system, whilst a specific module on substance misuse and crime will assess the criminological links, contemporary global issues, and assessment strategies associated with drugs and criminal behaviour. Criminal law features alongside other aspects of law, including law of contract and tort.

This course is the ideal route for those who currently hold a foundation degree in Criminal Justice, or in a similar field, and want to top-up their qualification to gain a full honours degree.

About this course


When you graduate you will have developed a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system and the work associated with it. Public, private and voluntary organisations including public service departments, such as the police, prison service, youth service, probation service, social work, legal practise and the courts are all pathways and vocation options. Analytical abilities and critical thinking skills will have been developed throughout and will complement wider transferable skills of research, IT, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication.

You must have a minimum of 240 credits that have been achieved from the foundation degree in Criminal Justice at University Centre St Helens or achieved at a comparable college or university that has modules that correlate with the course.

Course programme

What will I study?

You will explore the historical perspective relating to the establishment and development of both the police and prison service in England and Wales. This will include exploring the effects and risks of misused legal and illegal substances, the theoretical approaches to criminal justice and punishment, and learn a clear understanding of the key principles relating to contract and civil law from a management perspective. You will also produce a dissertation to engage you in the process of secondary research using an eclectic mix of materials to facilitate your investigation and present your findings.

Year 1 (Level 6)

SO6810 Policing and Prisons (20 credits)

Policing and prisons provides you with a historical perspective relating to the establishment and development of both the Police and prison service in England and Wales. It will direct you to research and analyse how political, social and economic factors play a major part in how these organisations operate and function in society today.

SO6811 Substance Misuse and Crime (20 credits)

Substance misuse and crime explores the history, effects and risks of legal and illegal substances that are misused. It will develop a multi-perspective understanding of substance use and misuse both nationally and internationally by enabling you to apply sociological, historical, psychological and cultural perspectives to the study of this subject.

SO6812 Crime and Justice Practitioner (20 credits)

Crime and justice practitioner develops an understanding of the theoretical approaches to criminal justice and punishment. It will examine models of rehabilitation and punishment and how these in turn influence and affect the practices of criminal justice professional practitioners.

SO6813 Law, Responsibility and Management (20 credits)

Law, responsibility and management provides students with a clear understanding of the key principles relating to Contract and Civil Law from a management perspective. It will also aim to provide a working knowledge of Civil Law, Contract Law, and Management operating in practice within the criminal justice system.

SO6814 Dissertation (40 Credits)

Dissertation will allow the exploration of a specific area of interest to develop an 8,000 word research project. It aims to engage you in the process of secondary research using an eclectic mix of materials to facilitate your investigation and present your findings. It will be restricted to non-empirical research only to ensure that ethical issues do not present you with obstacles to prevent achieving your goal.

Additional information

Assessment will be carried out throughout the year of the degree, primarily through both formative and summative assessments. This will include presentations, case studies, essay plans, question and answer sessions, debates and literature reviews. You will also be assessed through essays, exams, reflective logs and reports.
