Leading and Managing Professional Practice - 30 Credits
This module aims to introduce students to the key factors that affect strategies for leading and implementing change in their work environment. Students will develop their skill to critically reflect on aspects of their professional practice and to demonstrate how they can develop their practice to better provide for the needs of the children and families they are working with. It explores current issues and dilemmas facing practitioners in the early years field and identifies strategies that may support personal and professional development. Key legislation and statutory frameworks are critiqued identifying implications for early year’s setting. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of how to improve practice through working alongside children, and their families, ensuring the voices of those they are working for is heard and acted upon.

Independent Project - 45 credits
Normally, students will be expected to have initiated provisional discussions to explore the feasibility of possible topics before commencing the module. At the beginning of the module each student will submit a proposal (outlining the potential topic, any ethical issues, proposed methodologies, possible sources of subjects, and preliminary reading). The supervisor will provide tutorial guidance to facilitate an on-going dialogue during the remainder of the project, reading and commenting on early drafts as appropriate. Group tutorials will be time-tabled to provide the opportunity to share ideas and research methods, as well as to explore themes of common interest. Project workshops will be time-tabled during the semester in order to encourage students to share their research experiences of the research process, including any useful ideas or problems

Children in Crisis : A Global Perspective - 15 credits
This module aims to develop critical awareness of situations of crisis faced by many children today in both the majority and minority worlds. The impact of crisis on children in the short and long term will be explored. Adult responsibilities for children’s crisis situations, and adult systems for helping children out of crisis will be examined. Implications for child development and children’s rights will be considered.

Special Needs and Disability - 15 credits
This module will consider the history and development of legislation, policy and practice for young children with special needs and how their needs can be met, particularly for those children with disabilities or who are vulnerable for other reasons. Students own philosophies and beliefs relating to the issues raised will be challenged to ensure issues are considered from all perspectives and the impact their own beliefs can have on their working practice will be addressed. The module will also consider issues of labelling as well as models of disability which can be applied to young children with special needs and how these can impact upon attitudes and provision. Issues of assessment and early intervention will be debated in light of current policy and practice in the field. The effects of having a young child with additional needs within the family will also be explored to ensure students consider the family perspective. Effective practice within current legislation and policy will be debated throughout the module.

Partnership with Families in the Support Context - 15 credits
The central aim of this module is to develop in students a critical understanding of the issues that surround professional partnerships with children and their families plus the legislation that supports this aspect of professional work. Students will explore the dynamics between families, the professionals who have an influence on them and the power relationships between them. Students will develop an understanding of sociological perspectives throughout the module.
