The purpose of the BA (Hons) in Education Studies course is to give students an insight into the world of Education. It will explore educational differences within the United Kingdom and Internationally as well as allowing students to examine pedagogy and andragogy in context. The course will also explore the impacts of governments and governmental legislation on education and how the socio-economic climate influences the needs of education.


Upon successful completion learners should be able to:



  • Have a balanced knowledge and understandingof the principal features of education in a wide range of contexts and provide opportunities for students to appreciate educational theory, policy and practice both in the United Kingdom and globally.

  • Have the knowledge of UK education systems, including provision at different key stages, and global issues in education allowing the learner to assess the possibilities, opportunities and challenges for the future of education

  • Understand ‘Education’ in its broadest sense by drawing on a wide range of intellectual resources, theoretical perspectives and academic disciplines to illuminate understanding of education and the contexts within which it takes place in an ever-growing number of educational settings.




BA (Hons) in Education Studies modules may include:

  • History of Education in the UK,

  • Child development and socio-economic impact,

  • Education in an International context,

  • Alternative approaches to education,

  • The role of an educator in society




Progression routes upon completion of the programme could include social work, youth work, employment in the education sector, PGCE or Masters Level study. It allows new students to obtain an entry into education studies. It will also allow a progression route for the Certificate of Education graduates to a Dip HE and then full BA (Hons). It will also provide opportunities for employment in education management roles and other associated youth work roles.

Applying for a Full-Time Degree-Level course



Apply through UCAS



If you would like to apply for any of Colchester Institute's Degree Level courses, your method of application will differ depending on whether
you want to apply for a full-time or part-time version of your chosen course. If you are applying full-time, you will need to apply through the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which is a UK-based charity whose main role is providing the application process for almost
all British universities.



The service cost £23 for a multi application and £12 for a single application in 2015, however it is possible this may increase for 2016 applicants.
Each course has a unique "course code" that you will need to make note of and use during your applciation. You can find out more information and

Applying for a Part-Time Degree-Level course


All part-time degree-level courses are not offered through UCAS, and must be applied for directly through Colchester Institute.

Applying as a Full-Time International Student (EU & Overseas)


Applications for Higher Education courses from International Students must also be made via the Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Applications can be made on-line from any country via the UCAS website
at www.ucas.com. Details of all eligible courses
are given at this site, Colchester Institute's UCAS reference number is CINST C75.



International Applications made via UCAS will be forwarded to us for processing but the offer and acceptance
procedure is made through UCAS and not directly with us.
Once we are notified of your acceptance we will request payment of your deposit for more information on fees and deposits

Applying as an Part-Time International Student (EU only)


Students coming into the UK on a Tier 4 (General) student visa will only be eligible to apply
for full-time courses at a minimum NQF level 3
or above or full-time English Language Programmes.
